Oscars 2016: 8 Biggest Mistakes The Academy Made

4. Best Adapted Screenplay

Who Won? The Big Short Due to its inability to win elsewhere, The Big Short is going to go down in history as a nothing movie; nobody will really remember it. And that's fine; it's totally good, but not all that great. Its screenplay is its best thing (Margot Robbie in a bathtub plays better on the page that on-screen), but that does not in any way make it the best of the year. Who Should Have Won? Carol Wow, wasn't Carol given the short shrift? It was a movie that presented homosexuality in such an honest way that it being a lesbian movie almost ceased to matter. Not that that impacted Academy votes - the Cannes favourite didn't get nominated for any of the big big prizes and won nothing. An award in screenwriting, which it deserves given that it comes from an emotionally complex Patricia Highsmith novel, would have been a really nice way to rectify that. But no, it went to the cheap option.
