Who Won? Amy I know why Asif Kapadia won the Oscar for Best Documentary for Amy. His previous movie, Senna, was not even long-listed for the Academy Awards due to it being made entirely of archive footage. So I can understand why the award went to him this year for Amy, which adopts the exact same technique to similar effect. However, it's certainly not as powerful here, with an excess of older recordings making the development of time more flippant and odd directorial choices - song lyrics on screen - not really working. What Should Have Won? Cartel Land It feels almost disingenuous to suggest a movie about cartel violence should trump a movie about a singer just by its very nature, but Cartel Land is one of those movies that manages to take an affecting subject and make it a story well worth telling. Matthew Heineman was all but robbed of an Oscar for his brutal presentation of a world entirely different from those consuming it.
