What Is It? Ang Lee's dark take on a halftime show. The two-time Oscar winner's back with a look at heroism in the modern age, with recent military conflict filtered through the eyes of a "hero" during a celebration of the horrors he's been through. The cast is eclectic and the idea seemingly small, but all chatter suggests something on the scale of Life Of Pi.

Why Could It Be A Contender? Billy Lynn is a painfully modern movie, taking in not only the war in Iraq, but the long-time effect that has on those fighting. The Oscars love something social relevant, and that's here in spades. Couple that with far-reaching visuals - there's already a lot of talk about the new tech made for the film, and it's a proper box ticker. It's worth noting that while Lee's picked up Best Director twice, his films have never snagged the big prize, meaning there may also be a sense of him deserving "full recognition".

What Might Stop It? Aside from a less than glowing critical assessment, everything is in place for Billy Lynn to be a strong contender. And when you get to that point, it's entirely how the competition fares and how much the studio pushes, but Lee has as good a chance as any. But, yeah, a nomination for sure.
