Oscars 2017: 8 Things The Academy Screwed Up
8. Zootopia As Best Animated Feature
What Happened
Somewhat predictably, Zootopia (called Zootropolis in Europe, because they obviously didn't understand the utopia pun for some reason), walked away with Best Animated Feature, beating Moana, Kubo And The Two Strings, My Life as A Zucchini, and The Red Turtle.
Sure, it's a great movie, and like Moonlight and Hidden Figures, it has a very important message, but it absolutely was not the best Animated Feature of the year.
What Should Have Happened
Kubo And The Two Strings should have won. It shouldn't even have been close, frankly, but the all-powerful Disney machine did what it does best and hoovered up the award that might as well be called Walt's Statue.
Kubo was stunning, not only in visual terms (stop motion to that level is just astonishing), but in terms of story, characterisation and imagination. It was wholly unique, utterly transformative and it has just as important a message about life and death and family as Zootopia's rather on-the-nose sentiments on progressiveness and cultural integration. The best film did not win.
