How ironic in 2017's America - obsessed with fake news as it is - that the ceremony would end with an old white guy stating falsehoods as the truth. How ironic in the same year that Hidden Figures was up for Best Picture that a predominantly black production would be overlooked for a glossier predominantly white one (albeit temporarily). How ironic that a film with a gut-punching fake happy ending would be falsely told it had won Best Picture...

You honestly couldn't write it. And yet, The Academy conspired to make it happen: someone gave Warren Beatty the wrong envelope, somehow containing a winner's card that had already been given to Emma Stone, and he pulled a Steve Harvey and got the wrong film crew up on stage. It was agonising, to say the least.
