Hidden Figures puts the focus on a little known story of three African-American women working at NASA in the 1960s, whose work proved key to the United States in the space race era.

It's an important story for a pivotal time in American history, and a great time for it to be told on film. The movie isn't without its problems, with the script probably the most glaring (even if you don't know the story, it's obvious where it's going) and a couple of wasted cameos, but it's so uplifting they're easy to ignore.

The real strength comes from the cast, with Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle MonĂ¡e in the lead roles. Spencer has a deserved Oscar nomination, but Henson truly excels in the movie's biggest role, bringing to life the under-celebrated Katherine G. Johnson.

The story isn't exactly subtle, but its celebration of these women and account of what happens make this one of the most feel-good movies of a time when the U.S., and indeed the world, feels incredibly divided.
