Suicide Squad is an Oscar nominee. Yep.

This year's Oscar nominations have just landed, and as usual, there's a ton of elation, frustration and outright rage about what was and wasn't recognised ahead of February 26th's Academy Awards show.

On the whole this was actually one of the safer nomination reveals in recent memory, low on truly jaw-dropping surprises even if there were more than a few unexpected names read out and, well, one of the year's most controversial comic book movies ended up being nominated for something (sorry, Deadpool).

La La Land's road towards Best Picture seems pretty much set in stone at this point, but as past ceremonies have shown us, it's never too late for the momentum to shift and another horse in the race to pick up some unexpected steam.

Here's 15 shocks from this year's nominations...

15. Shock: Passengers Gets More Nominations Than Silence

Despite being a presumed Oscar contender before anyone actually saw it and realised how mediocre it was, most Oscar pundits didn't actually have Passengers pegged for any nominations at all, but it managed to sneak two nods in for Best Production Design and Best Original Score.

Many cried foul that Passengers snuck into the Production Design field and likely stole away a nod from Martin Scorsese's Silence, and this served the one-two punch of also ensuring that the critically-reviled Passengers actually ended up with one nomination more than Scorsese's film.

While Paramount probably sent Silence screeners out too late, it's still a travesty that such a terrific movie didn't merely miss out on a Best Picture nod, but was also upstaged by such a disappointing blockbuster.
