Oscars 2017 Nominations: 15 Shocks & Snubs
6. Snub: Hayley Squires (Best Supporting Actress - I, Daniel Blake)
This one was always an extreme long shot, but the Supporting Actress field was actually a pretty strange one this year: Viola Davis was actually a Lead Actress shoved into Supporting because of category fraud, Nicole Kidman got nominated for a fairly unremarkable performance in Lion and Octavia Spencer took most of the praise for Hidden Figures even though Taraji P. Henson gave a better performance in the lead.
Hayley Squires gave one of the year's best performances of any kind in I, Daniel Blake, but sadly like the movie entirely, she wasn't recognised by the Academy, perhaps because its message about the UK's benefits system simply didn't resonate with non-British voters.
Fingers crossed that she'll pick up the BAFTA as a consolation prize.
