Oscars 2017 Nominations: 15 Shocks & Snubs

13. Shock: Viggo Mortenen (Best Actor - Captain Fantastic)

Suicide Squad Joker Oscar
Bleecker Street

Even though Viggo Mortensen picked up a ton of nominations on the awards circuit for his magnificent performance in the year's little indie film that could, it still seemed like he'd probably end up snubbed in favour of more Oscar-friendly performances in larger films, such as, say, Jake Gyllenhaal in Nocturnal Animals, or most likely Tom Hanks in Sully.

Mortensen however prevailed with his second nomination to date, and it's some very well-deserved recognition indeed, especially as it'll shine a light on a film that's flown considerably under the radar with most. He hasn't got a hope in Hell of winning, but here the nomination is very much the win.
