Oscars 2017 Nominations: 15 Shocks & Snubs
12. Snub: Arrival (Best Visual Effects)
Arrival actually ended up performing better-than-expected for the most part, scooping up an impressive eight Oscar nominations, but that doesn't mean it wasn't still snubbed in a few departments.
The Visual Effects category is always a crowded field, but Arrival's fantastically subtle use of CGI to enhance the military camp and build atmosphere with the alien spacecraft shouldn't have gone unnoticed.
Unfortunately it's a case of more subtle, restrained effects work losing out to the understandable bombast of films such as Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange and Rogue One in particular.
The win is The Jungle Book's to lose anyway, but it would've been nice to see Arrival's effects rewarded also.
