Oscars 2017 Nominations: 15 Shocks & Snubs
11. Shock: Hollywood Forgives Mel Gibson
It's perhaps the final piece of proof needed that Mel Gibson has basically been forgiven by Hollywood at large: he received a Best Director nomination for his tenacious helming of Hacksaw Ridge, his first Academy recognition since he won two Oscars for producing and directing Braveheart in 1996.
It's a shame that Hell or High Water's David Mackenzie couldn't make the final five directors, but it's an incredibly strong line-up this year and there's not a single soft option among the lot.
The Academy could easily have snubbed Gibson for his past antics, but this is proof perfect that Hollywood is happy to welcome him back.
