Oscars 2017 Nominations: 5 Things They Got Right (& 4 They Got Wrong)

1. No Amy Adams For Best Actress

Arrival Amy Adams
Paramount Pictures

Granted, the Best Actress race was hotly-contested, but this still comes off as the most egregious snub of the lot. Of all the contenders, Amy Adams was one of the actresses seemingly considered a lock for the nomination - only Emma Stone felt like a safer bet, and I could've seen the race coming down to just the two of them in the end.

Arrival has a lot going for it, which is why it's so widely recognised here, but the film wouldn't work as well without Adams' performance at its very core. She is absolutely terrific in the movie, and provides it with a hell of a lot of its emotional heft; there's a broken nature to her character, a real feeling of turmoil, and she's incredibly relatable too, even while her appearance affects an otherworldliness. Deftly handling the highs and the lows her character is dealt, Adams gives this alien movie its most human element.

There's a feeling that Adams is fast-becoming the new DiCaprio, in terms of lack of Oscar recognition, and this will only contribute to that. Her time will surely come one day, and I don't know if she'd have won for this, but she definitely deserved to be nominated.
