Oscars 2017 Nominations: 5 Things They Got Right (& 4 They Got Wrong)
2. Two Noms For Passengers
Passengers - nominated for two Academy Awards.
Not words I thought I'd be typing. Passengers hasn't had any real look-in during awards season; the film didn't get a great critical reception, didn't set the box-office alight, hadn't seemed to mount a serious campaign, and, well, it wasn't really in the conversation at all.
Out of nowhere, it feels, it's received the nods for Original Score and Production Design, neither of which are deserved, and both of which result in more worthy nominees missing out. Thomas Newman is a talented composer, but his score isn't really anything special, while the design is your typical run-of-the-mill sci-fi/spaceship.
Jackie and Silence can consider themselves unfortunate to miss out on the Design award here, while a host of movies - Nocturnal Animals, The BFG, Florence Foster Jenkins - seemed better placed for an Original Score nomination.
