Oscars 2017 Nominations: 5 Things They Got Right (& 4 They Got Wrong)

3. No Deadpool

The most surprising narrative in the build-up to this year's Oscars nominations was the gradual rise of Deadpool. The R-rated, fourth-wall breaking superhero movie is far from your typical Oscar flick, but started to build hype when it received big nominations from the Golden Globes.

That could've been attributed to the HFPA doing their own thing and trying to be different, but then the Guilds - often reliable bellwethers for the Oscars - followed suit. So there was a genuine chance of the movie receiving a Best Picture nomination.

Thankfully, it didn't happen. Although the movie is enjoyable, it wasn't even the second best superhero movie of 2016, and while the Oscars could always do with widening their scope, there's no metric by which Deadpool was worthy of a Best Picture nomination.
