Oscars 2017: Predicting The Winners
11. Best Original Score
Will Win: La La Land Should Win: Moonlight Surprise Win: Jackie
Of course La La Land will win in this category- it is a striking score full of wistful melodies, instruments to get your pulse racing and show-stopping songs. For such a variety of songs that offer both something new as well as vibrant tributes to the past, it's unlikely that it could lose out on any awards related to sound and music. There hasn't been an Oscar-nominated Musical's score this energetic since The Lion King.
Moonlight's masterful blend of classic and modern covers everything from an innocent childhood shattered to redemption for a broken man, at one intoxicating and electrifying. It is atmospheric, haunting but somehow remains hopeful throughout.
It's the most characterful soundtrack in recent years and Nicholas Britell's stunning work should be the winner, but it is more of a symphony than a songbook - because it works best if listened to in its entirety, it will lose out to the sheer breadth of La La Land's score.
Although there is every chance that Mica Levi's ethereal score for Jackie could score the Pablo Larrain biopic one of its few awards, much like her work on Under The Skin marked her out as a talent to watch, and Jackie is unlike any score heard before, arguably improving upon her past efforts. It would be richly deserved, and a category where La La Land might lose out. La La Land's score might have energy, but Jackie's score is more invasive and powerful.
