Oscars 2017: Predicting The Winners

2. Best Sound Editing

La La Land Oscar
Summit Entertainment

Will Win: La La Land Should Win: Deepwater Horizon Surprise Win: Hacksaw Ridge

It seems like another obvious win for La La Land here - after all, a musical of this calibre is the result of incredible work by sound technicians, and it will certainly be recognised because it is a very distinctive musical that has one foot in fantasy and one in reality. The technicians cannot simply create realistic or artificial sound, but merge the two- such effort will be recognised on the night.

To look at Deepwater Horizon, everything about its production and its situation seems like a challenge. It is expertly crafted and to have pulled off creating an authentic sound that complements such an intense experience for the audience and for the characters is no small feat.

For this accomplishment, the Oscar should go to Deepwater Horizon for putting the viewer in the action and making the scenario all too believable for the viewer- the sound makes sure we aren't just witnessing a story, but makes the audience feel like we are there on the oil rig.

Creating exceptional sound for a War film full of deafening noises requires a certain kind of talent, to keep the audience in the action and make sure everything remains coherent, and Hacksaw Ridge pulls that off with aplomb.

The Revenant was thought to be a sure thing, and yet Mad Max: Fury Road managed to steal both sound awards. Hacksaw Ridge might just repeat that trick and take away a couple of awards from La La Land in the sound categories.
