Oscars 2017: Predicting The Winners

1. Best Sound Mixing

Will Win: La La Land Should Win: Rogue One Surprise Win: Hacksaw Ridge

You guessed it, La La Land wins again! It is unlikely that any other film would win in any of the sound and music categories, and Sound Mixing is no exception. The amount of sound work involved in creating the perfect musical is staggering and La La Land is the epitome of the genre.

In Sound Mixing and Editing, it is understandable why it will comfortably beat every other contender, and deservedly so- the film cannot be faulted on an audio level. Like previous winners Les Misérables and Dreamgirls, the sound mixing ensures we are totally captivated and creates a film that doesn't just seem like a stage production presented on screen, but a film in its own right.

But Rogue One: A Star Wars Story manages to mix together a soundscape for a fictional universe, which involves a whole different level or artistry. For the scale and ambition of its sound, the latest Star Wars should win out against La La Land. Although the latest Star Wars film has not been particularly well-received in the nominations, so a win seems unlikely.

Don't overlook the fact that War films traditionally do very well in this category. Similar to its potential in the Sound Editing category, Hacksaw Ridge might just be the shock winner based on previous wins for The Hurt Locker, Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan. It is hard to imagine La La land losing in Sound Mixing or Sound Editing, but Hacksaw Ridge is its only real competition.
