Oscars 2017: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

10. Achievement In Film Editing

Oscars Casey Affleck Denzel Washington
Paramount Pictures

Nominees: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, La La Land, Moonlight

Who Should Win

La La Land.

Tom Cross won the Oscar for his work on Whiplash, and his latest collaboration with Damien Chazelle should wield the same results. Like in Whiplash, he plays around with classic techniques to great effect. The way he cuts together the film's song-and-dance sequences, and perfectly complements the Golden Age trappings, make this the worthy winner.

Who Will Win

La La Land.

Arrival could provide a strong challenge here - it picked up the ACE Award for best edited drama, while La La won in the musical/comedy category - but once again voters will probably look to La La Land. They're already well aware of Cross' talents, and he again pulls off some showy editing, meaning we should have a remarriage of Best Editing and Best Picture, which have been apart in recent years.
