Oscars 2017: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)
9. Best Documentary Feature
Nominees: Fire at Sea, I Am Not Your Negro, Life, Animated, OJ: Made in America, 13th
Who Should Win
OJ: Made In America.
Both 13th and I Am Not Your Negro provide important and revaletoary looks at race in America, but the sheer scope and achievment of Made In America makes it a worthy winner. Admittedly more TV series than film, it's a deep dive into the life, career, and of course trial of O.J. Simpson, using that as a jumping off point for an examination of race relations and injustices, as much as its infamous subject.
Who Will Win
OJ: Made In America.
The only thing holding this back is its run time, which comes in at almost eight hours in length. It's episodic, TV-esque storytelling, and some voters could favour the more traditional but still powerful docs in this category. But ultimately it's that breadth that should win it the award. It's epic, insightful, and hugely ambitious - and manages to pull it off.
