Oscars 2017: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

20. Best Live-Action Short Film

Oscars Casey Affleck Denzel Washington
Qualia Films

Nominees: Ennemis Interieurs, La Femme et le TGV, Silent Nights, Sing, Timecode

Who Should Win

Sing.

The closest the short category comes to imitating likely Best Picture winner La La Land, this Hungarian movie follows a young girl who joins a choir, only to be told she isn't good enough and should lip-sync. This leads to an act of rebellion, which provides the film with a lot of silliness, but also a serious heart.

Who Will Win

Ennemis Interieurs.

One of the two shorts here to tackle immigration, Ennemis Interieurs (or Enemies Within) tackles the subject with more nuance than the heavy-handed, Oscar-baity Silent Nights. It's a strong, timely story, and should play well with voters.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
