Exemplary facial expressions separate some of the finest actors from their peers. This was the test for Andrew Garfield in his latest work Breathe. Nevertheless, Garfield should have a lot to smile about since his performance in Breathe has left numerous viewers starstruck.

In Andy Serkis' directorial debut, Garfield tackles the part of newly paralyzed adventurer Robin with compassion and humor. Robin lives his life with daring despite his traumatic injuries. Heartfelt dramas tend to do well during Oscar season but Serkis and Garfield are unflinching in the way they showcase the effects of polio.

The biographical feature tests the Amazing Spiderman actor's capabilities and he earns high marks from critics as a man who's not confined by his physical limitations. Garfield utilizes his eyes to convey emotion in scenes where Robin's bedridden or hospitalized. Rather than surrender, Garfield portrays Robin as a voice for the disabled who embraces the helpful technology of his time.

Garfield's fellow Brit Eddie Redmayne enthralled filmgoers with a similar role. Oscar voters were motivated by his interpretation of physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Garfield not only has a comparable amount of praise but he also has a previous nod for Hacksaw Ridge.

When Breathe was screened at the London Film Festival, Garfield's name was uttered throughout the event. Garfield insists that awards recognition isn't on his mind but a repeat trip to the Oscars seems to be on every predictor's lips.

Though he's playing coy about his odds, Garfield should be grinning on nominations morning.
