Oscars 2018: 11 Blockbuster Movies That Deserve Best Picture Consideration

8. War For The Planet Of The Apes

Matt Reeves' concluding entry into Andy Serkis' Apes trilogy is one of the year's best-reviewed blockbusters, and more to the point, it has a more serious, stern tone that's better consistent with the Academy's tastes.

Plus, with Andy Serkis finishing up his fantastic work as Caesar with this movie, the narrative driving War's Oscar potential revolves around the achievements of this trilogy as a whole. On its own terms, though, War is emotionally devastating, visually stunning and composed with a level of care rarely seen in blockbuster cinema. It's an all-time classic.

How Likely Is It?: Sadly, a large portion of the Academy's contingent of old men still find the notion of voting for a movie about apes fighting humans "too silly", which puts it at an immediate disadvantage.

Best Picture isn't likely, and it'll probably have to settle for a Best Visual Effects nod (which it should absolutely win) and maybe a nomination in one of the sound categories if it's lucky. Shame. 2/10
