Oscars 2018: 8 Most Game-Changing Nominations

6. Mudbound - Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Actress

Mudbound may have missed out on the top awards like Best Director and Best Picture (it was an outside bet for both at best), but it did pick up three very notable nominations: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Song, and Best Supporting Actress.

Aside from representing something of a comeback for Mary J. Blige (who's in for the latter two categories), it's bigger repercussions are in what it might mean for streaming services, and Netflix in particular.

Netflix has been trying for a few years now to break into the Oscars game without much luck, and this is easily their biggest and best contender yet. Four Oscar noms, all in strong categories rather than a bunch of below-the-line ones, show that they are becoming a serious player in the Academy game, and with some big releases on the horizon (including Martin Scorsese's The Irishman) that trend should only continue.
