Oscars 2018: 8 Most Game-Changing Nominations

7. Timothée Chalamet - Best Actor; The Best Actress/Supporting Actress Categories

Timothée Chalamet's nomination wasn't a surprise - indeed, it was a dead cert - but it's still interesting for one reason: how young he is.

Chalamet, at just 22-years-old, is easily the youngest nominee this year, with three over 50 and Daniel Kaluuya at 28. Going further, he's actually the youngest Best Actor nominee since 1944, when Micky Rooney was nominated for Babes in Arms. It's unlikely Chalamet will win, even though he deserves to, because Gary Oldman has been sweeping up. But the first shift it might represent is recognising performances from younger male actors, rather than assuming they need to wait to be more seasoned before they can be recognised.

It's also interesting that this year brings the oldest acting nominee ever as well, with 88-year-old Christopher Plummer nominated for Best Supporting Actor. And this range could also be starting to shift to actresses too, where people in Chalamet's age-range are frequently recognised (recent winners include Emma Stone, Brie Larson, and Jennifer Lawrence). This year, three of the women nominated for Best Actress are over 40, and all five in the Supporting category are. It's often said that there aren't many good roles for women over 40 in Hollywood, and while there's still plenty to do on that front, this is a sign of things starting to change.
