The most compelling Oscar narrative of the entire year has been whether or not legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins would finally win an Oscar on his 14th nomination for his blistering work on Blade Runner 2049.

Though he faced stiff competition going up against Dunkirk's Hoyte van Hoytema, Deakins' name was finally called this year, to a rapturous standing ovation, proving just how beloved and respected the peerless DP is in the industry.

A typically chilled-out Deakins offered an off-the-cuff acceptance speech, allowing an entire generation of nerds to finally rest easy that arguably the best-living cinematographer finally has his little gold statue.

With long-time Oscar snub-ees Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio and Deakins now all Oscar'd up, the underdog narrative falls to composer Thomas Newman, who has racked up an impressive 14 nominations without a win over the last 23 years. His time will come sooner rather than later, surely?
