Oscars 2018: 9 Ups & 8 Downs
6. Best Production Design: The Shape Of Water Beats Blade Runner 2049
Though the writing had been on the wall for some time with its precursor wins in this category, The Shape of Water scooped a somewhat dubious Best Production Design win, ousting the far more deserving candidate, Blade Runner 2049.
That's not to denigrate the production quality of Guillermo del Toro's movie, because production designer Paul Denham sure did a fantastic job making a $20 million movie look many times more expensive, but the sheer ambition, scope and technical brilliance of Blade Runner 2049's world really should've made it the easy winner here.
