Oscars 2018: 9 Ups & 8 Downs
5. Kobe Byrant Wins A Totally Undeserved Oscar
Even if you've not actually seen the animated shorts in contention this year, you'd be right to raise your eyebrows at Kobe Bryant winning an Oscar.
To that end, his short film Dear Basketball, a tribute to basketball written by Bryant himself, took home the gong despite being by far the weakest film in this category.
Shorts Garden Party, Negative Space and Pixar's Lou were especially strong contenders and all would've been well-deserving winners, especially compared to Bryant taking home an Oscar for what's essentially a vanity project.
It's extra odd considering that there are still lingering questions over Bryant's 2003 rape allegations, and to reward him in the year of #MeToo honestly seems pretty tone deaf.
