9. Snub: Denis Villeneuve (Best Director - Blade Runner 2049)

The Best Director field is where a lot of auteur filmmakers can flourish even if their movies struggle to score much in other areas.

To that end, there was a lot of hope that Denis Villeneuve might score his second consecutive Best Director nod for his sublime work on Blade Runner 2049, driven by passion for his singular, uncompromising vision for the film.

Sadly, Villeneuve wasn't quite so lucky, and though the final line-up features a fantastically eclectic collection of filmmakers who did splendid work last year, were they all really superior to Villeneuve? Not a chance.
