Oscars 2018 Nominations: 18 Shocks & Snubs

6. Shock: Jordan Peele (Best Director)

The nomination that so many people wanted to see but didn't actually expect to was Jordan Peele land a Best Director nod for his fantastic work on Get Out.

Given the Academy's historic prejudice against horror films and Peele being a first-time filmmaker, it seemed far more likely that Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) would take the fifth spot, but Peele nevertheless managed to snag it.

Considering how the film industry still has a ways to go with hiring more filmmakers of colour, recognising Peele's achievement is at least a step in the right direction, especially as he's totally deserving of it outside of any awards politics debates.
