Oscars 2018 Nominations: 18 Shocks & Snubs

4. Shock: The Big Sick (Best Original Screenplay)

Though Holly Hunter sadly missed out on a Best Supporting Actress nomination, The Big Sick did scoop a single nod for Best Original Screenplay.

With the film's awards buzz cooling down in recent months, it seemed like it would risk being totally shut out of the Oscars, with The Florida Project possibly stealing away its screenplay nod.

Ultimately, though, writer-star Kumail Nanjiani and co-writer Emily V. Gordon, who wrote the story based on their own experiences, prevailed with a well-earned nod for their sweetly affecting culture clash dramedy.

In another timeline it would've been easy to imagine the film performing much better, but that mid-summer release date was probably a mistake in retrospect.
