Oscars 2018 Nominations: 18 Shocks & Snubs

17. Snub: Holly Hunter (Best Supporting Actress - The Big Sick)

Back in the summer, Holly Hunter was considered an early favourite to take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her fantastic work in The Big Sick, but her momentum began to cool as awards season picked up steam, and she ultimately didn't even end up with a nomination.

It's especially shocking as this category had two fairly surprising nominations with Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water) making the cut, while the more consistently-lauded Hunter has been left with nothing.

It most likely speaks to the indie dramedy being released outside of Oscar season more than anything, but considering that The Big Sick was nominated elsewhere by the Academy, Hunter's exclusion is still rather baffling.
