16. Shock: Logan Is The First Superhero Movie Nominated For Its Screenplay

Though some were upset that Wonder Woman didn't score a single nomination, one of this year's most crowd-pleasing nods was the Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Logan, deemed by many to be the year's strongest superhero offering.

The screenplay categories are always fun because they do allow more populist fare to sneak nominations every now and then - Straight Outta Compton received an Original Screenplay nod in 2016 - and while Logan was never going to score much "serious" consideration, the fact it's the first-ever superhero film to receive a screenplay nomination is incredibly significant.

Given that even The Dark Knight missed out on a screenplay nod back in 2009, it's clear that the Academy is starting to come around to the idea of these "silly" movies being worthy of awards. It hasn't got a chance of winning, but the nomination is very clearly the win here.
