What It Deserved: Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Original Score, Visual Effects, Cinematography

There was no film last year like Annihilation, which ultimately proved a bit too much for many to handle. Shunted onto Netflix, with only a small, unceremonious theatrical run, it was always a long-shot to be a big awards player, but that doesn't rob it of how special it is.

Even for those not caught up in its story, Annihilation deserved more for just how technically great it is. Alex Garland and his team crafted an indelible merge of sci-fi and horror here, with imagery and sound to distort the senses and terrify your mind. Its soundscape is electrifying, capable of putting your firmly on the edge of your seat or cowering back in it, scared for what will happen next, and the score is the kind that will haunt you throughout and well after the credits.

It's not just sound where it excels though. With the otherworldly Area X comes a playground for Garland to let his imagination run loose, and every frame of the movie is beautifully composed and designed to add to the eeriness. At the very least, there are its visual effects, which not only look great, but bring to life some of the most horrifying creature creations in some time. It deserves it for the bear alone.
