Oscars 2019: 13 Biggest Acting Snubs
2. Tilda Swinton/Dakota Johnson (Suspiria)
The only person on this list who could have actually been nominated for multiple roles within the same film, Tilda Switnon's not one, not two, but three different performances in Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria showed off precisely why her name is so revered in cinematic circles.
Playing Madame Blanc, Dr. Jozef Klemperer, and Helena Markos herself, Swinton spans the entire spectrum of performances. As Blanc, her performance is restrained and distant, intentionally painting her as a loving-yet-difficult mother figure for the entire company. As Klemperer, Switnon completely disappears behind some equally Oscar-worthy make-up and becomes the beating heart of the film through emotional beats such as Klemperer's reunion with his long-dead wife or the reaction shots Swinton is able to make oh-so-effective during the finale, even as she is underneath all of the prosthetics.
And though her time as Markos may be comparatively brief, she chews the scenery with all the intensity of a rabid creature, delivering some of the film's most iconic lines and moments. She does all of this while, again, being submerged under pounds of prosthetics and being entirely unrecognizable.
While Swinton's range of performances makes her the obvious choice, the leading lady herself, Dakota Johnson, was just as deserving of some Oscar love. As Susie Bannion, Johnson gives a subtle-yet-powerful performance that sells one of the most surprising and bold character arcs of the year. The Susie we start the film with and the Susie we end the film with are two very different characters, yet Johnson's remarkable performance keeps us so anchored in her throughout the entire film that the transformation feels completely earned.
