Oscars 2019: 13 Biggest Acting Snubs
1. Nic Cage (Mandy)
Last but certainly not least is the living legend himself, Mr. Nicolas Cage.
After years spent essentially appearing exclusively in straight-to-the-bargain-bin DVDs, Cage had an unbelievably great year in 2018 from a glorious cameo in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies to his scene-stealing performance as Spider-Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But the real crowning jewel of his year was his performance in Panos Cosmatos' Mandy, which was not just his best performance of the year, it was his best performance in decades.
Cosmatos' vibrant and off-kilter film is fantastical in every way, creating an environment and aesthetic in which Cage is able to go completely off the rails and yet still feel completely at home within the film. And boy, does he go off the rails.
Moments like the long-take just after Mandy's death, as Cage's Red comes to grips with it in the bathroom, are pure unfiltered Cage madness at its absolute best. Similarly, the subsequent scene of him attempting to explain what he's hunting to Bill Duke's character and delivering the line "They were weirdo, hippie-types, whole bunch of 'em. And then there was some muscle - it didn't make any sense. There were bikers, and gnarly psychos, and... crazy evil!" in the kind of instantly unforgettable way that only Cage can.
It was a gonzo, swing-for-the-fences kind of performance that just worked in every way imaginable, as Cage dug deep within himself and reached depths he had not even visited in years.
