Oscars 2019: 16 WTF Moments
12. Black Panther "Steals" Three Oscars
It was great to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally get its first taste of Oscar gold - especially after the DCEU scored its first gong two years ago for Suicide Squad's makeup and hair - but most Oscar prognosticators were expecting a single win for the franchise at best.
Instead, Black Panther defied expectations and scooped an impressive three Academy Awards. First up, it snagged Best Costume Design away from season-long front-runner The Favourite, scooped Best Production Design despite controversy over its CGI-assisted world, and Best Original Score over Nicholas Britell's far more Oscar-friendly - and honestly, just better - work on If Beale Street Could Talk.
Few would've been surprised if Black Panther went home empty handed and Avengers: Infinity War took the Best Visual Effects Oscar, but alas, Black Panther's surging popularity clearly paid off dividends here, even if some might argue it wasn't quite the most deserving nominee in any case.
