Oscars 2019: 9 Ups & 8 Downs
2. Shocker! Olivia Colman Beats Glenn Close For Best Actress
Surely the most crowd-pleasing surprise of the entire night was Olivia Colman's shock Best Actress win for her sublime performance in The Favourite.
Colman had pretty much been trailing Glenn Close all season long, who was widely expected to win a career Oscar on her seventh nomination.
But in a welcome twist, Colman's name was read out, and the Brit actress took to the stage to give a characteristically shell-shocked acceptance speech.
Close gave a very good performance in a merely decent film, but Colman's fantastic work in an almost equally fantastic film ultimately felt far more deserving.
Colman confirmed herself as speech-giver of the night with her closing inspirational gambit, "Any little girl that's practising her speech on the telly, you never know."
Sophie from Peep Show is now an Academy Award winner. What a crazy world.
