Oscars 2019: Predicting The 10 Best Popular Films Nominees
2. Suspiria
Suspiria isn't the kind of film you'd generally expect to see nominated for any awards.
It's a remake (not exactly the Academy's favorite thing) of a horror film (definitely not the Academy's favorite thing). And yet, there's reason to be optimistic here. While hasn't been released yet, it's already earned itself a pretty Academy-friendly spot on the line-up.
First off, its releasing in November. Distributor, Amazon Studios, has opted to bypass the month of October and instead choose a more awards-friendly release closer to the actual nominations. Secondly, the early tidbits of this that have been screened at various conventions have been masterful. The scene screened at Cinemacon earlier this year lasted a few minutes and had people quite literally running out of the room.
And lastly, it's directed by Luca Guadagnino. Just earlier this year, Guadagnino saw his previous film, Call Me By Your Name, be nominated in all of the major categories. With a big and strange follow-up like this, one can expect that the Academy will be looking to honor Guadagnino, but not exactly by giving Suspiria a Best Picture nom.
Instead, they'll funnel it off to this category, assuming it makes enough money to qualify.
