Oscars 2019: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

17. Sound Mixing

Ryan Gosling First Man
Universal

Nominees: A Star Is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma, Black Panther

Who Should Win

First Man

Again, the sound of this film is nuts. The way the rocket take-offs, the eerie quiet, the beautiful score, and all the rest are mixed together is a thing of wonder. The sound creates a visceral impact, designed to be deafening and scary, without losing the emotional threads along the way.

Who Will Win

First Man

Another close one, but big films do tend to do well here, and the sound of First Man is so immersive that it's going to be very difficult for voters to ignore, especially with all the rest in contention in bigger categories. A Star Is Born has a good shot here too, but First Man has the edge in both Sound categories.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
