Oscars 2019 Winners List: Olivia Colman, Rami Malek And Green Book Win Big

Shocks, surprises and the Academy doing what it always does.

In a night where the Academy did what the Academy always does by awarding Green Book the Best Film Oscar, there were also some surprises. The big talking points of this year's ceremony will no doubt be that victory and Olivia Colman's delightful win for Best Actress.

To be honest, most of the awards went as expected: you could have picked out the Best Animated Film, Best Animated Short, Best Documentary, Best Song and Best Actor (even with a controversial, divisive film behind him) from the minute the nominations were announced. Beyond them, there was some hope that we'd see some deviations from the most predicted winners, but it's all worked out as expected.

Was Green Book the best film of the year? No. Was it the most Oscar-friendly? Undoubtedly. Was Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury the best of the year? No. Was it the one that hit the most Oscar tick boxes? Undoubtedly. The Academy tends to do what the Academy always does, even after they claim they're trying to solve issues of the past.

Inevitably there were some strange victories in there - like Colman's win over Glenn Close (though it's not undeserved, as she's brilliant in The Favourite and an absolute treasure) and the win for Best Editing for Bohemian Rhapsody, which is just plain wrong. The only possible justification for that one is that the Academy were as delighted as I was with the transition shot of the cockerel crowing Gallileo. Nothing else in editing terms in there marks it out as exceptional.

Anyway, it's done now and we all get to look forward to next year when something else goes wrong. Here's your Class Of 2018 winners...
