Oscars 2020: 15 WTF Moments
9. Lin-Manuel Miranda References Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Anthony Ramos introduced Lin-Manuel Miranda, who in turn introduced a montage of some of the most memorable Best Original Song nominees of all time, which of course culminated in a surprise performance of "Lose Yourself" by Eminem.
But during Miranda's brief rundown of the impact that iconic songs can have upon movies and vice versa, he couldn't resist the urge to namedrop a most surprising pop-culture staple: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Beyond mentioning more immediately obvious iconic movie tunes such as Breakfast at Tiffany's' "Moon River" and Top Gun's "Danger Zone," Miranda referenced Partners in Kryme's "Turtle Power," which was featured in the closing credits to the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
While we're going to assume that Miranda was being a tad tongue in cheek here, hearing such a verifiable staple of 80s kids' childhoods mentioned on the Oscar stage sure was unexpected.
