Oscars 2020 Nominations: 16 Biggest Shocks, Snubs & Surprises
10. Shock: The Lighthouse - Best Cinematography
Even the most die-hard fans of Robert Eggers' mesmerising surreal drama The Lighthouse weren't expecting it to get any love whatsoever from Oscar voters, despite plenty of passionate cheerleading for Willem Dafoe's stunning performance in particular.
So a hugely pleasant surprise it was, then, to see Jarin Blaschke's beautiful monochrome cinematography receive a nomination amid the far higher-profile likes of 1917, The Irishman, Joker, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
It hasn't got a hope in hell of winning of course - this is all sewn up for Roger Deakins' mind-blowing work on 1917 - but in every sense the nomination is very much the win for a movie that just isn't getting enough awards.
