Oscars 2020 Nominations: 16 Biggest Shocks, Snubs & Surprises
11. Snub: Awkwafina (The Farewell) & Lupita Nyong'o (Us) - Best Actress
Best Actress is another field this year that's just a bit of a mess.
Though the nominations for Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), and Charlize Theron (Bombshell) feel thoroughly deserved, it's a shame that the single nominated performance from a black actor happened to be Cynthia Erivo's rather forgettable performance in the Oscar-bait misfire Harriet.
And that Erivo was nominated over Lupita Nyong'o, whose outstanding performance in Us was picking up major awards traction in recent weeks, makes no sense whatsoever.
Then there's Awkwafina (The Farewell), by far the most surprising omission from the five.
Sadly this category is pretty much over before it's even begun, as Renee Zellweger (Judy) is clearly steamrolling her way to a Best Actress Oscar for an acceptable performance in a completely mediocre movie, just as Rami Malek did in the Best Actor field for Bohemian Rhapsody last year.
