Oscars 2020: Predicting The Winners In Every Category

9. Best Visual Effects

1917 George McKay
Universal

WINNER

1917

NOMINEES

Avengers: Endgame

The Irishman

The Lion King

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The visual effects category has seen some surprises in the past both pleasant and baffling, though this year's race seems like a clear-cut duel between 1917 and Avengers: Endgame.

Ultimately however, Endgame's sheer sensory assault, especially in act three, may come off as too much of a muchness - or too much of a repetition, even - whereas 1917's VFX are more subtle and still do a fantastic job of enhancing the overall experience.

The MCU's status as a persistent bridesmaid in this category will most likely continue.
