Oscars 2021: 10 Best Picture Movie Contenders

7. One Night in Miami

Promising Young Woman
Amazon Studios

Best Supporting Actress winner Regina King makes her directorial debut with this fictionalised account of a meeting between Malcom X, Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown in a Hampton House hotel room in 1964.

This Amazon original may mark a return to the Academy Awards for King, whose dynamic direction has been one aspect of the film consistently praised by critics. The performances of Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr have also been commended for their characterisations of the legends that they each portray, along with the screenplay by Kemp Powers, who adapted his own stage play of the same name for the screen

The movie serves as an impressive portrait of its inspiring and intricate real-life subjects and showcases the talent of all involved, both in front of and behind the camera. It has been appreciated for its depiction of newfound power as a theme, and its parallels to modern day America.

It's looking like this drama is one of the front runners for Best Picture so far, and perhaps for Best Director for King also.
