Oscars 2021: 10 Best Picture Movie Contenders

6. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Promising Young Woman
Netflix

This Netflix original drama is based on August Wilson's play of the same name which concerns an influential blues singer Ma Rainey. Viola Davis portrays the title character and turns in a predictably good performance, cementing her reputation as one of the most reliable and gifted actors of her generation.

An argument could be made however, that it is really Chadwick Boseman's film, whose performance as Levee Green was met with widespread critical acclaim. It was Boseman's final performance before his tragic passing in August of 2020 and many critics have opined that it is his finest.

The film details the struggle of black artists working to make their voices heard with delicacy and empathy. Its sensitive direction paired with its superb costume and production design make it not only a thoughtful and well-conceived mural of early 20th Century America but also highly entertaining to watch.

While it isn't the only well-made biopic released this year, it certainly stands out as one of the best, and certainly worthy of awards attention, as it will no doubt receive.

Brian Roche hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
