12. Best Makeup And Hairstyling
Quite a strong category based on the work but the conversation has almost solely turned to Ma Raney's Black Bottom and the transformative work done to make Viola Davis into the titular Blues singer.
Emma feels like the weakest nominee here, not bad just not on par with its co-nominees. Makeup on black and white films always presents its own array of challenges but for the most part Mank requires nothing too outlandish that makes it stand out.
This really boils down to Glenn Close vs. Viola Davis and which one looked less like they usually do thanks to the makeup department. Hillbilly Elegy is a far less enjoyed film so Ma Rainey's Black Bottom will take the win here.
It's actually a shame because the best work amongst the nominees is the newest live action adaptation of Pinocchio which has some truly amazing fantastical practical effects that make the film feel magical from start to finish. Most impressive of all being the work done for the titular puppet himself. Still, there will be no beating Davis' horse hair wig.
