9. Best Editing
The all important Editing category that is likely to contain the Best Picture winner even if that film doesn't end up winning this award. Nomadland is the Best Picture frontrunner and Chloé Zhao did her own editing which both helped to land it a nomination. It won't win here though.
The Father's subtle editing to make the narrative like a puzzle is appreciated and a welcome nomination but this is the category where that film is weakest. Promising Young Woman's nomination here over something like Minari should speak to the support of the picture but nobody is talking about this film for its editing.
This is a race between Trial of the Chicago 7 and Sound of Metal. Both are really strong in their editing and have each picked up precursor victories (Sound of Metal at BAFTA, Trial of the Chicago 7 at the ACE Eddie Awards).
Sound of Metal is unquestionably picking up Best Sound whereas Trial is flagging in all other categories. If the Academy wants to spread the wealth, it will award Trial of the Chicago 7 for its editing.
