Oscars 2021: Final Predictions In All 23 Categories
8. Best Adapted Screenplay
This is one of those cases where there is a 'right' winner and a 'wrong' winner. Some unexpected nominees in this category to be sure, The White Tiger was a welcome surprise with a script that feels like The Favourite set in India. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm made the cut which is curious considering how much of that film relies on the unscripted interactions with the public.
One Night in the Miami which underperformed considerably is here as well which is rightfully deserved, the film managed to take the stage play and successfully make it especially cinematic which is worthy of recognition.
The nominees this comes down to are the current frontrunner Nomadland and The Father. The Father most recently won this category at the BAFTAs which has sparked genuine conversation about its chances. Neither script was eligible at the WGA which means the only time the two have faced off with any voting overlap with the Oscars was with the British Academy.
The Father is coming on strong and if Nomadland is weak anywhere it'll be here. With a script that is focused on unscripted interactions with non-professional actors, it makes sense to give the nod to The Father for its tight focus and crisp dialogue. Hopefully the Nomadland hype train will stop to recognise the best script of the category. It's entirely possible.
