6. Best Supporting Actress
Without being too critical, this is a rather weak category and earlier in the season it seemed like it could be anyone's to win. The nominated supporting actresses aren't bad they just don't compare to their companion categories.
Amanda Seyfried makes the cut for being the most enjoyable character in the dour drama Mank and Maria Bakalova breaks the comedy curse by breaking into the Oscars on her very first performance.
Olivia Colman is always excellent but this is an after glow nomination from her win a few years ago. Her work is strong but she lacks a standout scene that will stick in the minds of voters.
Glenn Close has the strongest narrative of the five as this is her eighth career nomination without a win. Unfortunately, Hillbilly Elegy has been critically massacred and it just doesn't feel like it is her time this year.
That leaves the perfectly charming Yuh-Jung Youn who steals as many scenes as she can in the tender drama Minari. Youn has solidified herself as the frontrunner after a rocky start to the season that saw (an Oscar snubbed) Jodie Foster take the Golden Globe. Youn is the best of the bunch and seems unlikely to face an upset at this stage.
